Three Things Nobody Tells You

  • Clock faces write IIII for four, not IV. It has been the horological convention since the fourteenth century, and it balances the VIII directly opposite it on the dial.
  • There is no zero. Roman numerals count things; the concept of a symbol for nothing arrived in Europe centuries later with Arabic numerals.
  • 3999 is the ceiling. Writing 4000 would need four M's in a row, which the notation does not allow — that is what the vinculum, an overline meaning ×1000, was invented for.
  • Only I, X and C can be subtracted, and only from the next two larger letters. IL for 49 is wrong; the correct form is XLIX.

Seven Letters, Added Left to Right

Roman numerals use just seven symbols: I is one, V is five, X is ten, L is fifty, C is a hundred, D is five hundred and M is a thousand. Written largest to smallest, you simply add them up — MMXXVI is a thousand plus a thousand plus ten plus ten plus five plus one, which is 2026. The system grew out of tally marks rather than arithmetic, which is why it is excellent for carving into stone and terrible for doing sums. Try multiplying MMXXVI by XVII and the problem becomes obvious: there is no column structure, no place value, and no zero to hold an empty column.

Subtractive Notation, and Its Rules

When a smaller letter sits before a larger one it is subtracted instead of added: IV is five minus one, and XC is a hundred minus ten. This shortens the writing — IIII becomes IV, LXXXX becomes XC — but it only works under strict limits. Only I, X and C may be subtracted, never V, L or D. Each may only be taken from the next two larger values: I from V and X, X from L and C, C from D and M. That is why 49 is XLIX, built as forty plus nine, and not IL, which would mean fifty minus one and breaks every rule at once. Follow those constraints and each number has exactly one correct spelling.

The Rules That Make One Answer Correct

  • Repeat a letter at most three times: III is three, IIII is not standard — except on clock faces, by tradition.
  • V, L and D never repeat, because two of them would simply be the next letter up: VV is X.
  • Only I, X and C subtract. V, L and D never sit in front of something bigger.
  • Subtract only from the next two larger values: IV and IX are fine, IL and IC are not.
  • Read left to right, adding, and subtract whenever a smaller value comes before a larger one.
  • There is exactly one valid spelling per number. If two conversions disagree, one of them is not following the rules.

Where They Still Turn Up

  • Clock and watch faces — with the IIII quirk that gives away a traditional dial.
  • Film and television copyright dates in the closing credits, which is often the hardest place to read them.
  • Monarchs and popes: Elizabeth II, Louis XIV, Benedict XVI.
  • Book prefaces numbered in lowercase Roman — i, ii, iii — so the main text can still start at page 1.
  • Super Bowls, Olympiads and World Wars. The NFL broke its own rule for Super Bowl 50, judging that L looked wrong alone on a logo.
  • Music theory: chords are numbered I, IV, V — the three that build most popular songs.

How do I write a number in Roman numerals?

Break it into thousands, hundreds, tens and units, convert each part, then write them in order. 2026 becomes MM for 2000, XX for 20 and VI for 6, giving MMXXVI.

Why do clocks show IIII instead of IV?

Tradition, not error. Clockmakers have used IIII since the fourteenth century. The usual explanations are that it balances the VIII opposite it on the dial, and that a set of numerals casting IIII, VIII and XII lets a foundry split the work evenly. Big Ben is a well-known exception, using IV.

What is the largest Roman numeral?

3999, written MMMCMXCIX. Going higher would need four M's in a row, which the notation forbids. For larger numbers scribes used the vinculum — a bar over a letter multiplying it by a thousand, so V with a bar is five thousand.

Is there a Roman numeral for zero?
