One unit from geometry, one from a day's work

The hectare is defined by the metre and nothing else: a square 100 metres on a side, 10,000 square metres exactly. It is not an SI unit but is accepted for use with the SI, precisely because land needs a unit between the square metre and the square kilometre. The acre came from the opposite direction, as the area a man with a yoke of oxen could plough in a day, and it was standardised at 43,560 square feet. Dividing one by the other gives 2.471054 acres per hectare — an ugly number because the two systems were never designed to meet.

Why an acre is a long thin rectangle

Ploughing with oxen was slow to turn, so medieval fields were laid out long and narrow to minimise the number of turns. The traditional acre is one furlong by one chain: 660 feet by 66 feet, which is 43,560 square feet. That shape is why the acre has no side length worth quoting, and why the word survives in furlong, chain and the layout of old field boundaries still visible from the air across England. The hectare, arriving with the metric system in the 1790s, simply took the tidiest square that suited farming.
